2-Thiouracil
A sulphur derivative of uracil that blocks the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, needed to make thyroid hormones: in 1943 the endocrinologist Edwin Astwood was the first to use it to treat hyperthyroidism. It has since been replaced by more potent and safer drugs. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know?It is not just a laboratory product: it occurs naturally in the seeds of plants of the cabbage family (Brassicaceae), such as cabbages and mustards.
