Aldosterone
The main mineralocorticoid hormone, produced by the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex: it makes the kidneys retain sodium and helps regulate blood pressure and blood potassium. It was isolated in the early 1950s from beef adrenal extracts. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its discoverers, Sylvia Simpson and James Tait, first called it 'electrocortin': the name aldosterone came only after its structure was worked out. The two had worked together since 1948 and married in 1956.
