Algestone
A progestin derived from progesterone (16α,17α-dihydroxyprogesterone): its acetophenide derivative, discovered in 1958 and in use since the 1960s, is used in injectable contraceptives together with an oestrogen. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know? The acetophenide on its own was marketed in Italy from 1982 and has also been used in veterinary medicine in cattle; the name refers to the molecule's two hydroxyl groups closed into a ring with acetophenone.
