Ampicillin

A semisynthetic penicillin discovered in 1958 in the United Kingdom and on the market since 1961: it was the first 'broad-spectrum' penicillin, active not only on Gram-positive bacteria but also on several Gram-negative ones. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?Compared with penicillin G it has just one extra amino group: a small change in the molecule that widened its spectrum of action.
