Apomorphine
A dopamine agonist first obtained in the 19th century by heating morphine with an acid, yet free of opioid effects: today it is given by injection or infusion in advanced Parkinson's disease, to overcome sudden motor blocks. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?Despite its name it has nothing of morphine: a period comment said it resembles morphine no more than sawdust resembles sugar. In veterinary medicine it is still the emetic of choice for dogs.
