Ascomycin
A natural macrolide produced by the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. ascomyceticus, described in 1962 for its antifungal activity and later studied as a potent immunosuppressant; pimecrolimus is derived from it. This family brings together pharmacopoeial impurities and other impurities.
Did you know?It is almost identical to tacrolimus, differing only by an ethyl group in place of an allyl; it was even rediscovered as a new immunosuppressant under the code FR-900520, before its identity with ascomycin was shown in 1992.
