Azacitidine
A cytidine analogue that reduces DNA methylation, switching silenced genes back on: synthesised in Czechoslovakia in the early 1960s, it was approved in the US in 2004 for myelodysplastic syndromes. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?A few years after its laboratory synthesis it turned out that a bacterium, Streptoverticillium ladakanus, also makes it: hence its other name, ladakamycin.
