Benfluorex
A fenfluramine derivative, used in France and a few other European countries from 1976 to 2009 as an add-on treatment for type 2 diabetes and excess blood fats; in 2009 its withdrawal across the European Union was recommended. This family brings together the active ingredient and pharmacopoeial impurities.
Did you know?Chemically it is a benzoic acid ester: in the body it acts mainly as a prodrug and is converted into norfenfluramine, the same metabolite formed from fenfluramine.
