Benserazide
A peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitor combined with levodopa in Parkinson's disease: it does not enter the brain and stops levodopa from turning into dopamine before it gets there. It was first described in the early 1960s. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?On its own it has little therapeutic effect and works in synergy with levodopa. Chemically it is a hydrazide of the amino acid serine, linked to a benzene ring carrying three hydroxyl groups.
