Benzalkonium
An antiseptic and disinfectant of the quaternary ammonium family, born from the work of German pathologist Gerhard Domagk in the early 1930s; it is used on skin and surfaces and is a common preservative in medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It is not a single molecule but a mixture of similar compounds that differ in the length of their carbon chain: the main ones have 12, 14 or 16 atoms.
