Berbamine
A dimeric alkaloid of the bisbenzylisoquinoline family, found in several Berberis species and identified in 1895 in common barberry (Berberis vulgaris); in traditional Chinese medicine it is used as an antipyretic, antidiarrhoeal and tonic. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know?In 1956 it was also isolated from Atherosperma moschatum, an Australian tree that is botanically very distant from barberry.
