Berotralstat

An inhibitor of plasma kallikrein, the enzyme that releases bradykinin, which causes the swellings of hereditary angioedema. Approved in the United States at the end of 2020, it was the first oral therapy, one capsule a day, to prevent attacks of this rare disease. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know? The enzyme it blocks owes its name to the pancreas: in 1934 Eugen Werle found it in abundance in this organ and called it kallikrein, from the Greek kallikreas, meaning "pancreas".
