Bleomycin

An anticancer antibiotic discovered in Japan in the 1960s by Hamao Umezawa in the bacterium Streptomyces verticillus and approved in the United States in 1973: it is used for testicular and ovarian cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma. This family brings together the active ingredient and pharmacopoeial impurities.

Did you know?During fermentation the bacterium makes it bound to a copper atom, in a blue-coloured form; inside cells it binds mainly to iron instead and, with the help of oxygen, breaks DNA.
