Bromocriptine

A semi-synthetic derivative of an ergot alkaloid (Claviceps purpurea), a dopamine agonist first described in 1968: it is used to lower prolactin, in acromegaly and in Parkinson's disease. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?In 2009 a quick-release formulation, taken in the morning, was approved in the United States for type 2 diabetes: an unexpected use for an ergot derivative.
