Calicheamicin
An antitumour antibiotic of the enediyne family, produced by the bacterium Micromonospora echinospora: it slots into the minor groove of DNA and cuts it. Isolated in the mid-1980s, in 2000 it became the payload of an antibody-drug conjugate for acute myeloid leukaemia. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know? Its name recalls where it was found: the 'caliche pits', the chalky soils of Kerrville, Texas, where the soil sample containing the producing bacterium was collected.
