Cefoxitin
A beta-lactam antibiotic of the cephamycin family, obtained in the 1970s by semi-synthesis from cephamycin C, a natural antibiotic of bacterial origin: given intravenously, it resists many beta-lactamases thanks to a 7-alpha methoxy group. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?In microbiology labs the cefoxitin disc is used to detect methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRSA): in the United States it has replaced methicillin itself, which is no longer available.
