Chlorhexidine

An antiseptic of the bisbiguanide family, discovered in Manchester in the 1950s and introduced in 1954: it is used to disinfect skin and hands, and in mouthwashes and gels against dental plaque. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?It came out of research on new antimalarials: its molecule is made of two halves resembling proguanil, an antimalarial, joined by a chain of six carbon atoms.
