Colchicine
An alkaloid of the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale), isolated in 1820 by the French pharmacists Pelletier and Caventou. The plant already appears in the Egyptian Ebers papyrus, around 1550 BC, and colchicine is still used against gout. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?In 1937 Albert Blakeslee and Amos Avery discovered that it doubles the chromosomes of plant cells: since then it has been used to obtain polyploid plants in plant breeding.
