Cysteamine
A small molecule with an amine group and a thiol group, made by our body during the breakdown of coenzyme A; as a medicine it has been approved in the United States since 1994 for cystinosis, a rare inherited disease in which cystine builds up inside cells. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It works like a chemical key: it enters lysosomes and turns the trapped cystine into cysteine and a mixed disulfide, two molecules that can leave the lysosome.
