Dextrorphan
A compound of the morphinan family, the main active metabolite of dextromethorphan, produced by the liver through the CYP2D6 enzyme: it blocks NMDA receptors and contributes to the cough-suppressing effect. It was also studied for stroke, but its development was discontinued. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities and labelled standards.
Did you know?It is the mirror image of levorphanol, an opioid painkiller: same formula and same atoms, but arranged as in a mirror, and the "right-handed" version acts mainly on NMDA receptors rather than opioid receptors.
