Dextrothyroxine
The D optical isomer of thyroxine, that is, the mirror image of the natural thyroid hormone: approved in the 1960s to lower LDL cholesterol, it was later withdrawn because of its effects on the heart, which had already emerged in 1971 in a large coronary disease study. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know? The idea was to exploit the 'mirror-image' form of the hormone: it was hoped that, acting mainly on the liver, it would lower cholesterol without the hormonal effects of natural thyroxine.
