Dicumarol

A natural vitamin K antagonist anticoagulant, identified in 1940 in Karl Paul Link's laboratory at the University of Wisconsin: the prototype of the 4-hydroxycoumarins, it was taken by mouth against thrombosis until it was replaced by warfarin from the mid-1950s. This family brings together the active ingredient.

Did you know?It is born from mould: in spoiled sweet clover hay, certain fungi turn coumarin into dicoumarol. Its discovery explained a mysterious bleeding disease in cattle.
