Digitoxin
A cardiac glycoside obtained from the purple foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), first prepared in pure form in 1875 by Oswald Schmiedeberg; it is used in heart failure, especially in people with impaired kidney function, and in some arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It stays in the body for a very long time: its half-life is 7 to 8 days. As early as 1785, English physician William Withering had described the plant's medical uses in his famous treatise on the foxglove.
