Diloxanide
An intestinal amoebicide discovered in 1956 in the United Kingdom: it acts only inside the gut lumen against Entamoeba histolytica and is used in cyst carriers without symptoms or after tissue-active drugs. It is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient.
Did you know?It is taken as the furoate, a prodrug that the gut splits to release active diloxanide; its structure resembles chloramphenicol, and it may act on ribosomes in a similar way.
