Dobutamine

A synthetic catecholamine designed in the 1970s by Ronald Tuttle and Jack Mills starting from isoprenaline: it mainly stimulates the heart's beta-1 receptors, has been approved in the United States since 1978 and is used in cardiogenic shock and severe heart failure. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It is a mixture of two mirror-image forms with opposite effects on alpha-1 receptors: one stimulates them, the other blocks them. Together they balance out, leaving mainly the boost to the heart's contraction.
