Docusate
An anionic surfactant used as a stool softener: it lowers the surface tension of stools, so they take up more water and fat. It is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines and also helps to loosen impacted earwax. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It started life as a detergent: it was patented in 1937 and first sold as an industrial wetting agent; only in 1955 did two doctors propose using it for constipation.
