Eribulin
An anticancer drug that blocks microtubules, a simplified and fully synthetic analogue of halichondrin B, isolated in 1986 in Japan from the marine sponge Halichondria okadai; approved in 2010 for metastatic breast cancer and in 2016 for liposarcoma. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know?A tonne of sponges yields just 300 mg of halichondrin B: the decisive step was the total synthesis of the molecule, completed in 1992 at Harvard by Yoshito Kishi's group.
