Estrogens
Female sex hormones (mainly oestradiol, oestrone and oestriol), produced largely by the ovaries: they drive pubertal development and protect bone. Used in medicine since the early 1930s, today they serve mainly in hormonal contraception and menopausal hormone therapy. This family brings together other impurities.
Did you know? The first to be isolated was oestrone, in 1929, independently by Adolf Butenandt and Edward Doisy; oestrogens also have important roles in men, for example in the maturation of sperm.
