Ethionamide
An antituberculosis drug of the thioamide family, discovered in 1956 and approved in the United States in 1965: it is used for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It is a prodrug: it is activated by an enzyme of Mycobacterium tuberculosis itself, EthA, and once active it blocks the enzyme InhA, the same target as isoniazid.
