Ethynodiol

A synthetic progestin discovered in 1954; as etynodiol diacetate it came into use in 1965 in combined contraceptive pills, always paired with an oestrogen. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know?It works as a prodrug: the body rapidly converts it into norethisterone, the progestin that does the work; unlike most progestins it also has slight oestrogenic activity.
