Fentanyl

A synthetic opioid created in Belgium by Paul Janssen around 1960 and introduced in 1968 as an anaesthetic: today it is a mainstay of anaesthesia and severe pain management, also as a skin patch. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities and other impurities.

Did you know?Paul Janssen obtained it by screening molecules similar to pethidine in search of more potent opioids: the result is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.
