Finasteride

An inhibitor of type 2 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that turns testosterone into dihydrotestosterone: approved in the United States in 1992 for benign prostatic hyperplasia and in 1997 for male pattern hair loss. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It grew out of Julianne Imperato-McGinley's studies of a rare inherited deficiency of this enzyme in the Dominican Republic: in affected people the prostate stays small, a clue that inspired the medicine.
