Fusidic Acid

An antibiotic with a steroid-like structure, produced by the fungus Fusidium coccineum and described in 1962 by Danish researchers: it is used mainly in creams, ointments and eye drops against staphylococcal infections. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?Although it resembles a steroid it does not act like a hormone: it blocks elongation factor G (EF-G), jamming the ribosome that bacteria use to build their proteins.
