Garamine

An aminoglycoside pseudodisaccharide, made of a methylated amino sugar linked to 2-deoxystreptamine: it was obtained in the 1970s by hydrolysis of sisomicin and used as a building block for new semi-synthetic antibiotics related to the gentamicins. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know?Sisomicin, its source, is produced by the bacterium Micromonospora inyoensis: so, like gentamicin, its name ends in '-micin' rather than '-mycin', the ending reserved for antibiotics from Streptomyces.
