Gentamicin

An aminoglycoside antibiotic discovered in 1963 in New Jersey, USA, by the team of Marvin Weinstein, produced by the bacterium Micromonospora purpurea; in use since 1964 mainly against Gram-negative infections. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know? Its name recalls the vivid purple of Micromonospora purpurea cultures, similar to the dye gentian violet; it ends in -micin rather than -mycin because it does not come from Streptomyces.
