Gimeracil
An inhibitor of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down 5-fluorouracil: it is not used alone but together with tegafur and oteracil in an oral anticancer combination approved in Japan in 1999 and in Europe in 2011. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?In the combination the three components have a fixed molar ratio, 1:0.4:1, and one job each: tegafur generates the active drug, gimeracil slows its breakdown, oteracil protects the gut.
