Halofuginone

A synthetic halogenated derivative of febrifugine, a plant alkaloid, used in veterinary medicine as an antiprotozoal: a coccidiostat in poultry and, in the European Union since 1999, a treatment against cryptosporidiosis in newborn calves. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know? The febrifugine it derives from comes from the Chinese plant Dichroa febrifuga (chang shan), used for centuries in traditional medicine against malarial fevers: hence the name, 'the one that puts fever to flight'.
