Haloperidol

An antipsychotic of the butyrophenone family, synthesised in Belgium in 1958: it is used for schizophrenia, mania, delirium and tics, and is on the WHO List of Essential Medicines. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?It came from a search for a stronger painkiller based on pethidine: it was the 45th butyrophenone in the series, but in mice it behaved like chlorpromazine. It reached patients seven weeks after synthesis.
