Hexamidine
An antiseptic of the aromatic diamidine family, synthesised and patented in 1939 as a drug against trypanosomes; today it is used to disinfect skin and mucous membranes and as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities and other impurities.
Did you know?Only in the 1990s was it found to kill amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba too: since then it has been used in eye drops against a rare infection of the cornea, typical of contact lens wearers.
