Hydroxycarbamide
Also known as hydroxyurea, it is an antimetabolite that blocks ribonucleotide reductase, the enzyme that supplies the building blocks of DNA: approved in the United States in 1967, it is used for myeloproliferative diseases, chronic myeloid leukaemia and sickle cell disease. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know?It was first synthesised as early as 1869 by the chemists Dresler and Stein, but lay forgotten for more than fifty years before its biological effects were investigated.
