Hydroxychloroquine

An antimalarial of the 4-aminoquinoline family, synthesised in the late 1940s as an analogue of chloroquine and approved in the United States in 1955: it is also used for systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know? Its story begins with quinine, the alkaloid of cinchona bark (Cinchona): chloroquine was created in 1934 as a synthetic alternative to it, and hydroxychloroquine was obtained by modifying its structure.
