Hydroxyzine
A first-generation antihistamine of the piperazine family, synthesised in 1956 in Belgium: it is used for itching, anxiety and as a mild sedative. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know? Its main metabolite, formed in the body, is cetirizine: a far less sedating antihistamine that was later developed as a medicine in its own right.
