Iproniazid
A monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) born in the early 1950s as a tuberculosis drug: by the end of the decade it had become one of the first antidepressants ever marketed, and it was then abandoned almost everywhere in the 1960s. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.
Did you know? Its effect on mood was discovered by chance: in 1952 doctors noticed that tuberculosis patients treated with isoniazid, the sister molecule it derives from, became unusually cheerful.
