Isosorbide
A bicyclic diol obtained from D-sorbitol, itself made from glucose: in medicine it is used as an osmotic diuretic, for example in hydrocephalus and acute angle-closure glaucoma, and it is the basis of the nitrates isosorbide dinitrate and mononitrate for angina. This family brings together metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? From starch to plastic: as a plant-based substance it is being studied to make polycarbonates and epoxy resins that could replace bisphenol A.
