Isosorbide Dinitrate
An organic nitrate vasodilator: in the body it releases nitric oxide, which relaxes the muscle of the blood vessels. First described in 1939, it is used to prevent and treat angina pectoris and in heart failure. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know? Its backbone, isosorbide, is made from the glucose in starch by way of sorbitol; the same molecule is also being studied as a building block for plant-based plastics.
