Ixabepilone

A semi-synthetic analogue of epothilone B, a substance produced by the bacterium Sorangium cellulosum: it stabilises microtubules like paclitaxel and in 2007 was approved in the United States for metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.

Did you know?It differs from natural epothilone B by a single atom: a nitrogen in place of an oxygen, which turns an ester into an amide and makes the molecule more stable; that is why it is also called azaepothilone B.
