Ketoconazole
An imidazole antifungal that blocks the synthesis of ergosterol, a component of fungal membranes: discovered in 1976 in Belgium and in use since 1981, it is also used in creams and shampoos for fungal infections and dandruff. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?It was the first orally active azole antifungal. At high doses it also curbs cortisol production, so much so that in 2014 it was approved in Europe to treat Cushing's syndrome.
