Levodopa
An amino acid precursor of dopamine: unlike dopamine it can enter the brain, where it is converted into the neurotransmitter. Since the 1960s it has been the cornerstone of treatment for Parkinson's disease. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It was isolated in 1913 by Marcus Guggenheim from the broad bean, Vicia faba: testing it on himself he only got vomiting, an effect later explained by its very conversion into dopamine.
