Levonorgestrel
A second-generation progestin, the active laevorotatory form of norgestrel: used since 1970 in contraceptive pills, today also in emergency contraception, hormonal intrauterine devices and implants. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?Norgestrel was made by total synthesis in the early 1960s through the work of Plymouth-born chemist Herchel Smith and colleagues; of its two mirror-image forms only the laevorotatory one is active, hence the prefix "levo".
