Lincomycin

The founding antibiotic of the lincosamides, produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces lincolnensis and in use since the 1960s against infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know? Its name comes from Lincoln, Nebraska, where the soil sample containing the producing bacterium was collected; a chemical modification adding a chlorine atom gave rise to clindamycin.
